I recently discovered Kate Quinn, author of historical fiction books. Her latest caught my eye, The Alice Network. The story is exciting. She had me at the first sentence, “The first person I met in England was a hallucination.” Though the story held me in its grips throughout, I was especially fascinated at her development of characters, the protagonist, her foil, the grizzled old ex-spy, and even the minor characters. It is based on the life of an actual female spy network, and the author takes us through a juxtaposition of adventures between World War I and post- World War II. The story is both heart-wrenching and heartbreaking. I rate this one 5-Star.
